John Shaqi

لَمَّا حَضَرَ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ أُسَامَةَ الْمَوْتُ دَخَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ بَنُو هَاشِمٍ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ قَدْ عَرَفْتُمْ قَرَابَتِي وَ مَنْزِلَتِي مِنْكُمْ وَ عَلَيَّ دَيْنٌ فَأُحِبُّ أَنْ تَضْمَنُوهُ عَنِّي فَقَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ (عليه السلام) أَمَا وَ اللَّهِ ثُلُثُ دَيْنِكَ عَلَيَّ ثُمَّ سَكَتَ وَ سَكَتُوا فَقَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ (عليه السلام) عَلَيَّ دَيْنُكَ كُلُّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ (عليه السلام) أَمَا إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَضْمَنَهُ أَوَّلًا إِلَّا كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ يَقُولُوا سَبَقَنَا.


Translation

<a id="_Toc492473645">H 14962</a> – Aban, from Fazeyl and Ubeyd, who has said: <span class="first-chapter-phrase"><span class="first-in-chapter character-a">A</span>bu Abdullah</span><sup>asws</sup> has said: ‘When the death presented itself to Muhammad Bin Usama, the Clan of Hashim<sup>as</sup> came up to him. So he said to them, ‘You have recognised my being near in relations to you, and my status among you, and I have a debt upon me so I would love it if you could take the responsibility of it from me’. So Ali<sup>asws</sup> Bin Al-Husayn<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘By Allah<sup>azwj</sup>, a third of your debt is upon me<sup>asws</sup>’, then he<sup>asws</sup> was quiet and they remained quiet. So Ali<sup>asws</sup> Bin Al-Husayn<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘Upon me<sup>asws</sup> is all of your debt’. Then Ali<sup>asws</sup> Bin Al-Husayn<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘But what prevented me<sup>asws</sup> from assuming the responsibility of all of his debts at first was the abhorrence that they would say, ‘He<sup>asws</sup> preceded us for it’.
