قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) تَرِدُ عَلَيْنَا أَشْيَاءُ لَيْسَ نَعْرِفُهَا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَ لَا سُنَّةٍ فَنَنْظُرُ فِيهَا فَقَالَ لَا أَمَا إِنَّكَ إِنْ أَصَبْتَ لَمْ تُؤْجَرْ وَ إِنْ أَخْطَأْتَ كَذَبْتَ عَلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ .

میں نے ابوعبداللہ (علیہ السلام) سے عرض کیا: 'ہمارے پاس ایسے مسائل آتے ہیں جنہیں ہم نہ کتاباللہ میں پاتے ہیں اور نہ سنت میں، تو کیا ہم ان میں اپنی رائے لگائیں؟' آپ (علیہ السلام) نے فرمایا: 'نہیں۔ جان لو کہ اگر تم صحیح ہوئے تو بھی اجر نہیں ملے گا، اور اگر غلطی کی تو اللہ عزوجل پر جھوٹ بولا۔'
Translation
Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Al Washa, from Musna Al Hannat, from Abu Baseer who said, ‘I said to Abu Abdullah<sup>asws</sup>, ‘Things (certain matters) are referred to us, neither do we recognise these in the Book of Allah<sup>azwj</sup> not Sunnah. So can we apply our opinion in these?’ So he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘No, but if you are correct, you will not be Rewarded (for being correct), and if you err, you would have lied against Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic’.
