سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ بِالْوالِدَيْنِ إِحْساناً مَا هَذَا الْإِحْسَانُ فَقَالَ الْإِحْسَانُ أَنْ تُحْسِنَ صُحْبَتَهُمَا وَ أَنْ لَا تُكَلِّفَهُمَا أَنْ يَسْأَلَاكَ شَيْئاً مِمَّا يَحْتَاجَانِ إِلَيْهِ وَ إِنْ كَانَا مُسْتَغْنِيَيْنِ أَ لَيْسَ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَنْ تَنالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّى تُنْفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ أَمَّا قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ إِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِنْدَكَ الْكِبَرَ أَحَدُهُما أَوْ كِلاهُما فَلا تَقُلْ لَهُما أُفٍّ وَ لا تَنْهَرْهُما قَالَ إِنْ أَضْجَرَاكَ فَلَا تَقُلْ لَهُمَا أُفٍّ وَ لَا تَنْهَرْهُمَا إِنْ ضَرَبَاكَ قَالَ وَ قُلْ لَهُما قَوْلًا كَرِيماً قَالَ إِنْ ضَرَبَاكَ فَقُلْ لَهُمَا غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَكُمَا فَذَلِكَ مِنْكَ قَوْلٌ كَرِيمٌ قَالَ وَ اخْفِضْ لَهُما جَناحَ الذُّلِّ مِنَ الرَّحْمَةِ قَالَ لَا تَمْلَأُ عَيْنَيْكَ مِنَ النَّظَرِ إِلَيْهِمَا إِلَّا بِرَحْمَةٍ وَ رِقَّةٍ وَ لَا تَرْفَعْ صَوْتَكَ فَوْقَ أَصْوَاتِهِمَا وَ لَا يَدَكَ فَوْقَ أَيْدِيهِمَا وَ لَا تَقَدَّمْ قُدَّامَهُمَا .
Translation
Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Isa, and Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, altogether from Al Hassan Bin Mahbooub, from Abu Wallad Al Hannat who said, ‘I asked Abu Abdullah<sup>asws</sup> about the Words of Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:17#h23"><a href="/books/quran:17#h23">[17:23]</a></a> and the goodness to the two parents</span>. What is this goodness?’ So he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘The goodness is that you are good in their company, and that you do not encumber them if they were to ask you from what they are both needy to, and even if they were both self-sufficient. Is Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic no Saying <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:3#h92"><a href="/books/quran:3#h92">[3:92]</a></a> You will never attain to righteousness until you spend out of what you love; and whatever thing you spend, Allah Knows of it</span>. He (the narrator) said, ‘Then Abu Abdullah<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> said: ‘And as for the Words of Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:17#h23"><a href="/books/quran:17#h23">[17:23]</a></a> If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) "Ugh" nor chide them</span>, if they were to bore you so neither say ‘Ugh’ to them nor chide them if they were to hit you<span class="ibTxt"> and speak to both of them a gracious word</span>. If they do strike you, so say to them both, ‘May Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> Forgive you both’, so that would constitute a gracious word from you’. He<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> said: ‘<span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:17#h24"><a href="/books/quran:17#h24">[17:24]</a></a> And make yourself submissively gentle to them with the mercy</span>. He<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> said: ‘Do not fill your eyes from looking towards them, except with mercy and kindness, and do not raise your voice above their voices, and let not your hand be above their hands, and do not walk in front of them’.
