قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَيُّ شَيْءٍ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ فَقُلْتُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ فَقَالَ وَ كَانَ ثَمَّ شَيْءٌ فَيَكُونُ أَكْبَرَ مِنْهُ فَقُلْتُ وَ مَا هُوَ قَالَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ أَنْ يُوصَفَ .

ابو عبداللہ علیہ السلام نے فرمایا: اللہ اکبر کا کیا مطلب ہے؟ میں نے کہا: اللہ ہر چیز سے بڑا ہے۔ آپ نے فرمایا: کیا وہاں کوئی چیز تھی کہ وہ اس سے بڑا ہو؟ میں نے کہا: تو کیا مطلب ہے؟ آپ نے فرمایا: اللہ اس سے بالاتر ہے کہ اس کی تعریف کی جا سکے۔
Translation
And it is reported by Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Isa, from Marwak Bin Ubeyd, from Jumie Bin Umeyr who said, ‘Abu Abdullah<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘Which thing is Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Greater than?’ So I said, ‘Allah<sup>azwj</sup> is Greater than everything’. So he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘He<sup>azwj</sup> was, then there was a thing, so He<sup>azwj</sup> came to be Greater than it?’ So I said, ‘And what is it (which is correct to say)?’ He<sup>asws</sup>: ‘Allah<sup>azwj</sup> is Greatest, beyond description’.
