سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ السَّعْيِ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَ الْمَرْوَةِ فَرِيضَةٌ أَمْ سُنَّةٌ فَقَالَ فَرِيضَةٌ قُلْتُ أَ وَ لَيْسَ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَلا جُناحَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِما قَالَ كَانَ ذَلِكَ فِي عُمْرَةِ الْقَضَاءِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) شَرَطَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنْ يَرْفَعُوا الْأَصْنَامَ مِنَ الصَّفَا وَ الْمَرْوَةِ فَتَشَاغَلَ رَجُلٌ وَ تَرَكَ السَّعْيَ حَتَّى انْقَضَتِ الْأَيَّامُ وَ أُعِيدَتِ الْأَصْنَامُ فَجَاءُوا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ فُلَاناً لَمْ يَسْعَ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَ الْمَرْوَةِ وَ قَدْ أُعِيدَتِ الْأَصْنَامُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَلا جُناحَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِما أَيْ وَ عَلَيْهِمَا الْأَصْنَامُ .
Translation
A number of our companions, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Muawiya Bin Hukeym, from Muhammad Bin Abu Umeyr, from Al Hassan Bin Ali Al Sayrafi, from one of our companions who said, ‘Abu Abdullah<sup>asws</sup> was asked about the Sa’ee between Al-Safa and Al-Marwa, being an Obligation or a Sunnah?’ So he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘I said, 'Or, has not Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic Said <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:2#h158"><a href="/books/quran:2#h158">[2:158]</a></a> there is no blame on him if he goes round them both</span>’. He<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘That was regarding the Umra of the adjudication. Rasool-Allah<sup>saww</sup> stipulated upon then that they would raise (remove) the idols from Al-Safa and Al-Marwa. So a man pretended to be busy and neglected the Sa’ee until the days had passed, and the idols returned. So they (people) came over to him<sup>saww</sup> and said, ‘O Rasool-Allah<sup>saww</sup>! So and so did not perform Sa’ee between Al-Safa and Al-Marwa, and the idols have returned’. Therefore, Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic Revealed <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:2#h158"><a href="/books/quran:2#h158">[2:158]</a></a> there is no blame on him if he goes round them both</span>, i.e., and upon them were the idols’.
