003:004 Nadab and Abihu died before Yahweh, when they offered strange fire before Yahweh, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the presence of Aaron their father. 003:005 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 003:006 "Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him. 003:007 They shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the Tent of Meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle. 003:008 They shall keep all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting, and the obligations of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. 003:009 You shall give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons. They are wholly given to him on the behalf of the children of Israel. 003:010 You shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall keep their priesthood. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death." 003:011 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 003:012 "Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn who open the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be mine: 003:013 for all the firstborn are mine. On the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I made holy to me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and animal. They shall be mine. I am Yahweh." 003:014 Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, 003:015 "Number the children of Levi by their fathers' houses, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shall you number." 003:016 Moses numbered them according to the word of Yahweh, as he was commanded. 003:017 These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari. 003:018 These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei. 003:019 The sons of Kohath by their families: Amram, and Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 003:020 The sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers' houses. 003:021 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimeites: these are the families of the Gershonites. 003:022 Those who were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those who were numbered of them were seven thousand five hundred. 003:023 The families of the Gershonites shall encamp behind the tabernacle westward. 003:024 The prince of the fathers' house of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael. 003:025 The charge of the sons of Gershon in the Tent of Meeting shall be the tabernacle, and the tent, its covering, and the screen for the door of the Tent of Meeting,
