Life
Abd al-Mumin (reigned 1147–1163), disciple and successor of the reformer Ibn Tumart, transformed the Almohad religious movement into an empire, overthrowing the Almoravids and uniting the Maghreb from Morocco to Tripoli and much of al-Andalus under his rule. He took the title of caliph, built a centralized state and army, and founded a dynasty that would dominate the western Islamic world for over a century.
