Life
Al-Aziz Billah (reigned 975–996), son of al-Muizz, ruled the Fatimid empire at its zenith from Cairo, extending its reach into Syria and its influence across Mediterranean and Red Sea trade. Married to a Christian and employing Christian and Jewish officials, he presided over a notably tolerant, cosmopolitan court and patronized al-Azhar. His reign is remembered as the golden age of Fatimid rule.
