Life
Al-Mansur succeeded his brother al-Saffah in 754 and ruled two decades, consolidating Abbasid power and founding the new capital of Baghdad in 762. A ruthless and capable administrator, he set the dynasty on firm foundations before his death in 775.

He struggled to secure the dynasty against rivals within and without — including former allies of the revolution — and against Alid revolts that challenged Abbasid legitimacy in the name of the house of Ali.

His execution of Abu Muslim — the general whose Khurasani army had made the revolution — is a debated act of ruthless statecraft, and his suppression of the Alid revolt of Muhammad al-Nafs al-Zakiyya (762) deepened the Abbasid-Shia rift. The sources record both his cruelty and his competence.
Legacy
Al-Mansur was the real founder of Abbasid power, and Baghdad, his creation, became for centuries the greatest city of the Islamic world and a center of trade, learning, and administration. The dynasty he stabilized endured until the Mongols.
