Life
Abu al-Abbas came to power in 750 as the figurehead of the Abbasid revolution, which harnessed discontent — of non-Arab Muslims, Shia, and Khurasani soldiers — against the Umayyads. He took the name al-Saffah and reigned only four years, dying in 754.
Struggles & Trials
His accession required destroying the Umayyad house and consolidating a movement of many factions with conflicting hopes — Shia partisans who expected a ruler from Ali's line were among those disappointed by the Abbasid triumph.
