The Ottoman sultan who consolidated his father Mehmed II's conquests, welcomed the Jews expelled from Spain, and ended his reign deposed by his son Selim I.
Life
Bayezid II succeeded Mehmed the Conqueror in 1481 after a war with his brother Cem, and ruled three decades of relative consolidation. He rebuilt the navy, patronized culture, and in 1492 sent ships to bring Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain into Ottoman lands. Facing his son Selim's revolt, he abdicated in 1512 and died soon after.

His reign was shadowed by the long struggle with his brother Cem (a rival held as a hostage in Christian Europe) and, at its end, by the rebellion of his son Selim, who forced his abdication — a bitter close to a careful reign.
Teachings & Character
Remembered as pious and cultured — hence the epithet Veli, "the Saint" — Bayezid is especially honored for welcoming the expelled Jews of Spain, reportedly marveling that Ferdinand was called wise for impoverishing his own kingdom to enrich the Ottomans.

He fought wars with the Mamluks and Venice (gaining ports in the Morea), suppressed revolts, and rebuilt Ottoman naval power, though his reign was less expansionist than those around it.
Contested & Debated
His relatively cautious, consolidating reign is debated against the aggressive expansion before and after him, and the rise of Safavid-inspired unrest in Anatolia during his later years set the stage for his son's harder line. As a ruler he is assessed directly.
Legacy
Bayezid II stabilized the empire between two conquerors and is remembered for the humane reception of Sephardic Jewry, which enriched Ottoman cities; his welcome of the exiles remains a celebrated episode in Jewish and Ottoman history.
