Ibn Kathir

Imad al-Din

Scholars · 1300–1373 · 14th century · Damascus, Syria

The Damascene historian and Qur'an commentator, student of Ibn Taymiyyah, whose Tafsir and universal history remain among the most widely used works of Sunni scholarship.

Life

Ismail ibn Kathir (c. 1300–1373) was a Shafi'i scholar and historian of Mamluk Damascus, a student and associate of Ibn Taymiyyah. He wrote the influential Tafsir Ibn Kathir, prized for interpreting the Qur'an through the Qur'an and hadith, and the sweeping history al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya.

Struggles & Trials

His close association with the controversial Ibn Taymiyyah brought him into the theological disputes of his day, and he shared in the suspicion that attached to that circle.

Teachings & Character

Ibn Kathir championed interpretation of scripture by scripture and by sound tradition (tafsir bi'l-ma'thur), rather than speculative reasoning, shaping a scripturalist approach influential in later Sunni and Salafi thought.

Campaigns & Conflicts

A scholar, Ibn Kathir took no part in war, though his history chronicles the wars and dynasties of the Islamic past in rich detail.

Contested & Debated

His transmission of Israelite narratives (isra'iliyyat) with cautions, and his links to Ibn Taymiyyah's contested positions, are discussed by scholars. His works' authority in Sunnism is nonetheless very wide.

Legacy

The Tafsir of Ibn Kathir is one of the most widely read Qur'an commentaries in the world, and his al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya a major historical source; his scripturalist method deeply shaped modern Sunni exegesis.
