Life
Murad III (reigned 1574–1595) presided over an empire at its territorial peak but under mounting fiscal and administrative pressure. His reign brought long wars with Safavid Persia (gaining territory in the Caucasus) and the start of the Long Turkish War with the Habsburgs, alongside a brilliant court culture of miniature painting and letters. Growing harem and factional influence, and currency debasement, are cited by historians as signs of the strains beginning to tell on the Ottoman system.
