Uthman's Standardization of the Quran: The Suhuf, the Committee, and the Burned Codices

The Rider from the Frontier
The armies of Syria and the armies of Iraq were fighting side by side in the campaigns of Armenia and Azerbaijan when Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman noticed something that frightened him more than the enemy: the soldiers were reciting the Quran differently — and each camp was convinced its own recitation was the right one. Hudhayfa did not wait. He rode to Madinah, went to Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, and said the words that Sahih al-Bukhari has preserved for fourteen centuries:
يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَدْرِكْ هَذِهِ الأُمَّةَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَخْتَلِفُوا فِي الْكِتَابِ اخْتِلاَفَ الْيَهُودِ وَالنَّصَارَى
