HEATH, with beardless tips within the blossom; flowers grow in whorls; blossoms tubular, ribbed, and glandular; leaves by sixes, crowded, and turned inwards; stem stout. DESCRIPTION. STEM shrubby, short, stout, and a little flexuose, rough from the cicatrices of the leaves; the branches thickly covered with leaves, numerous, rather whorled, spreading, and expanded, with ascending points. LEAVES chiefly in sixes, very crowded, linear, an inch long, furrowed beneath, the older ones recurved, but beyond the middle incurvedly ascending. FLOWERS whorled near the ends of the branches in an horizontal direction; footstalks coloured, and hispid; with three rough-haired floral leaves. EMPALEMENT four-leaved; leaflets are linear, awl-shaped, harshly haired, and pressed to the blossom. BLOSSOM tubular, ribbed, an inch long, and closely beset with glandular hairs, white towards the end and red at the base; the segments of the border are rolled back, and slightly notched. CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads; tips just within the blossom, and beardless. POINTAL. Seed-bud turban-shaped and woolly. Shaft thread-shaped, just without the blossom. Summit four-cornered.
