Sacred Hymns from the German: Translated by Frances Elizabeth Cox
Hymns, German; Hymns, German -- Translations into English
Kein Ohr und Aug hat je erkannt,
Und Keines Herz hat noch empfunden
Der Seelen Ruh und Freudenstand,
Die alles selig überwunden.
Was hemmt die Erde meinen Lauf?
Was hält sie mich mit Zaum und Zügel?
Ich sehne herzlich mich hinauf;
Wer giebt mir hiezu Adlers Flügel?
Komm, Jesu, nimm mich zu dir ein,
Komm, säum mich nicht in meinen Freuden,
Ich habe Lust, bei dir zu sein
Und darum selig abzuscheiden.
Simon Dach. 1605-1659.
TREASURE IN HEAVEN.
Seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the
right hand of God.
Col. iii. 1.
My soul, let this your thoughts employ,
Defer not until death to ponder
On what shall be the heavenly joy,
Which God’s redeem’d are promis’d yonder.
True riches lie beyond the skies,
And there should’st thou be ever gazing;
Then learn earth’s treasures to despise,
To heaven your spirit upward raising.
But ah! those riches who can paint,
Reserv’d in heaven for righteous spirits,
Or shew me but in outline faint,
What he who scorns the world inherits!
No eye hath seen, no ear hath heard,
Nor heart of man hath comprehended,
The peace and joy in heaven prepar’d,
For those who well their course have ended.
Then why do earth and earthly things
Thus check my heavenward inclinations?
Oh! that I now had eagles’ wings,
To aid my longing aspirations!
Oh, come, Lord Jesus! nor delay
From this dark scene my soul to sever:
From earth I would depart away,
And with my Saviour be for ever.
EINS IST NOTH.
Eins ist Noth:
Maria hat das gute Theil erwählet.
Eins ist Noth: ach Herr, dies Eine
Lehre mich erkennen doch;
Alles andre, wies auch scheine,
Ist ja nur ein schweres Joch;
Darunter das Herze sich naget und plaget,
Und dennoch kein wahres Vergnügen erjaget:
Erlang ich dies Eine, das alles ersetzt,
So werd ich mit Einem in allem ergötzt.
Seele, willst du dieses finden,
Suchs bei keiner Creatur;
Lass was irdisch ist dahinten,
Schwing dich über die Natur;
Voller Andacht niederliess.
Ihr Herze entbrannte, dies einzig zu hören,
Was Jesus, ihr Heiland, sie wollte belehren;
Ihr Alles war gänzlich in Jesum versenkt,
Und wurde ihr Alles in Einem geschenkt.
