Several correspondents have written for my opinion anent the new British Esperanto Association. The success or non-success of the undertaking largely rests on its ability to convince the British Esperantist that it is to his or her advantage, social or financial, to become a Member of the Association _direct_, as well as participating with a local group, under a capitation fee. This advantage may not be apparent at first sight, but I firmly believe that, with efficient management, it will be realised by those who are public-spirited enough to become Members of the central body. Correspondence Bureau, Hotel arrangements, Commercial Exchange and Mart, Lending Library, Social Gatherings, Examination facilities, etc., should bring a large and increasing membership. But it is absolutely necessary that the enterprise be begun with courage and determination. No success may be reasonably expected unless a permanent office be engaged, and an Assistant (paid) Secretary be appointed, who may be always in attendance there to answer inquiries. If its promoters are contemplating a less venturesome line of action, I am strongly of opinion that the proposed Association will be at best but a weak measure, and end in disaster. The only excuse for this latter course would be an unfortunate lack of funds. Will not some one among our friends, well provided with this world's goods, be disposed to generously advance a small sum (at interest, if needs be) sufficient to start the Association in a manner befitting its comprehensive title?
