A COLLECTION OF SELECT NOVELS, written originally in Castilian by Don M. C. S. made English by H. Bridges, 1728. Butler's 'Hudibras' is a palpable metrical imitation of 'Don Quixote'. Beaumont and Fletcher's 'Knight of the Burning Pestle' is a still closer imitation. The tremendous influence of 'Don Quixote' upon English literature is difficult to define. He was imitated by the Elizabethans, e.g. Middleton's 'Spanish Gipsy' and Fletcher's 'Fair Maid of the Inn' are both taken from his 'Novellas Exemplares'.
