الحسین بن محمد، معلیٰ بن محمد سے، حسن بن علی الوشاء سے، احمد بن عمر الحلال سے، یا کسی اور سے، امام الرضا علیہ السلام سے روایت ہے، جنہوں نے فرمایا: میں نے ان سے کہا: وہ ہم سے جھگڑتے ہیں اور کہتے ہیں: امام کو امام کے سوا کوئی نہیں غسل دیتا۔ تو انہوں نے فرمایا: انہیں کیسے معلوم ہوگا کہ اسے کس نے غسل دیا؟ پھر تم نے ان سے کیا کہا؟ انہوں نے فرمایا: تو میں نے کہا: میں آپ پر قربان ہو جاؤں، میں نے ان سے کہا: اگر میرے مولا کہیں کہ انہوں نے اسے میرے رب کے عرش کے نیچے غسل دیا ہے، تو انہوں نے سچ کہا؛ اور اگر وہ کہیں کہ انہوں نے اسے زمین کے دور دراز حصوں میں غسل دیا ہے، تو انہوں نے سچ کہا۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: یوں نہیں۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: تو میں نے کہا: پھر میں ان سے کیا کہوں؟ انہوں نے فرمایا: ان سے کہو: میں نے اسے غسل دیا۔ تو میں نے کہا: کیا میں ان سے کہوں کہ آپ نے اسے غسل دیا؟ انہوں نے فرمایا: ہاں۔

Translation

Al Husayn Bin Muhammad, from Moalla Bin Muhammad, from Al Hassan Bin Ali Al Washha, from Ahmad Bin Umar Al Hallal, or someone else, (It has been narrated) from Al-Reza^asws, said, ‘I said to him^asws, ‘They are arguing against us saying that the Imam^asws is such that none can wash him^asws (for funeral) except for (another) Imam^asws. What would make them know who washed him^asws? So what did you say to them?’ So I said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you^asws! I said to them, ‘If my Master^asws says that he^asws washed him (7^th Imam^asws) beneath the Throne of my Lord^azwj, so he^asws has spoken the truth, and if he^asws says that he^asws washed him^asws in the surrounding of the earth, so he^asws has spoken the truth’. He^asws said: ‘Not like this’. So I said, ‘So what should I be saying to them?’ He^asws said: ‘Say to them that I^asws washed him (7^th Imam^asws)’. So I said, ‘Shall I say to them that you^asws washed him^asws?’ So he^asws said: ‘Yes’. (Note – the 7^th Imam^asws passed away at Baghdad while 8^th Imam^asws was in Madina - hence the questioning).
