الرَّجُلُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَمَرْتَنَا أَنْ نَفْتَتِحَ بِالْمِلْحِ فَقَالَ هَذَا مِثْلُ هَذَا يَعْنِي الْخَلَّ وَ إِنَّ الْخَلَّ يَشُدُّ الذِّهْنَ وَ يَزِيدُ فِي الْعَقْلِ .
Translation
Ali Bin Muhammad Bundar, from his father, from Muhammad Bin Ali Al Hamdany that, A man was in the presence of Al-Reza<sup>asws</sup> at Khurasan, so a meal was forwarded to him, upon it was vinegar and salt. So he<sup>asws</sup> began with the vinegar, and the man said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you<sup>asws</sup>, we have been instructed that we should begin with the salt’. So he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘This is similar to this, meaning the vinegar, and the vinegar strengthens the mind, and increases in the intellect’.
