كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَدَعَا بِتَمْرٍ فَأَكَلَ وَ أَقْبَلَ يَشْرَبُ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ لَوْ أَمْسَكْتَ عَنِ الْمَاءِ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا آكُلُ التَّمْرَ لِأَسْتَطِيبَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ.

الحسین بن محمد نے، معلی بن محمد البصری سے، انہوں نے ابو داود المسترق سے، انہوں نے اس شخص سے جس نے انہیں بیان کیا، اس نے کہا: میں ابو عبداللہ علیہ السلام کی خدمت میں حاضر تھا۔ آپ نے کھجور منگوائی، کھائی اور پھر اس کے بعد پانی پینے لگے۔ میں نے عرض کی: جعلت فداک! کاش آپ پانی سے رک جاتے۔ آپ نے فرمایا: میں کھجور اس لیے کھاتا ہوں تاکہ اس کے بعد پانی کو خوشگوار پاؤں۔
Translation
Al Husayn Bin Muhammad, from Moala Bin Muhammad Al Basry, from Abu Dawood Al Mustaraq, from the one who narrated it who said, ‘I was in the presence of Abu Abdullah<sup>asws</sup>, so he<sup>asws</sup> called for the dates. So he<sup>asws</sup> ate and went on to drink water over it. So I said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you<sup>asws</sup>! If you could wait from the water’. So he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘But rather, I<sup>asws</sup> eat the dates in order to aromatise the water over it’.
