سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْإِيمَانِ فَقَالَ شَهَادَةُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ [وَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً رَسُولُ اللَّهِ] وَ الْإِقْرَارُ بِمَا جَاءَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ وَ مَا اسْتَقَرَّ فِي الْقُلُوبِ مِنَ التَّصْدِيقِ بِذَلِكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ الشَّهَادَةُ أَ لَيْسَتْ عَمَلًا قَالَ بَلَى قُلْتُ الْعَمَلُ مِنَ الْإِيمَانِ قَالَ نَعَمْ الْإِيمَانُ لَا يَكُونُ إِلَّا بِعَمَلٍ وَ الْعَمَلُ مِنْهُ وَ لَا يَثْبُتُ الْإِيمَانُ إِلَّا بِعَمَلٍ .
Translation
Abu Ali Al Ashary, from Muhammad Bin Abul Jabbar, from Safwan, or someone else, from Al A’ala, from Muhammad Bin Muslim, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup>, said, ‘I asked him<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> about the <span class="iTxt">Emān</span>. So he<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> said: ‘The testimony that there is no god except for Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> and that Muhammad<sup style="font-weight: normal">saww</sup> is His<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> Rasool<sup style="font-weight: normal">saww</sup>, and the acknowledgement with whatever he<sup style="font-weight: normal">saww</sup> came with from the Presence of Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup>, and what settles in the hearts from the ratification of that’. He (the narrator) said, ‘I said, ‘The testimony, is it not a deed?’ He<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> said: ‘Yes’. I said, ‘The deeds is from the <span class="iTxt">Emān</span>?’ He<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> said: ‘Yes, the <span class="iTxt">Emān</span> cannot happen to be except with a deed, and the deed is from it, and the <span class="iTxt">Emān</span> is not affirmed except with a deed’.
