كُنَّا عِنْدَ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) فَتَذَاكَرْنَا الْعَقْلَ وَ الْأَدَبَ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا هَاشِمٍ الْعَقْلُ حِبَاءٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَ الْأَدَبُ كُلْفَةٌ فَمَنْ تَكَلَّفَ الْأَدَبَ قَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ وَ مَنْ تَكَلَّفَ الْعَقْلَ لَمْ يَزْدَدْ بِذَلِكَ إِلَّا جَهْلًا .

علی نے اپنے والد سے، انہوں نے ابو ہاشم جعفری سے روایت کی کہ انہوں نے کہا: ہم امام رضا علیہ السلام کی خدمت میں تھے اور ہم نے عقل اور ادب کا ذکر کیا۔ پس آپ نے فرمایا: اے ابو ہاشم! عقل اللہ کی طرف سے عطیہ ہے اور ادب مشقت ہے۔ پس جو ادب میں محنت کرے وہ اس پر قابو پا لیتا ہے، لیکن جو عقل کی بناوٹ کرے وہ اس سے سوائے جہالت کے اور کچھ نہیں بڑھاتا۔
Translation
Ali, from his father, from Abu Hashim Al Ja’fary who said, ‘We were in the presence of Al-Reza<sup>asws</sup>, so we mentioned the intellect and the good mannerisms. So he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘O Abu Hashim! The intellect is a Gift from Allah<sup>azwj</sup>, and the good mannerisms is skill and burden (which one can strive to develop). So the one who (succeeds) in developing the good mannerisms, would have ability over it, but the one who pretends to be a person of intelligence increases for him nothing but the ignorance’.
