قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ مَعْرِفَةِ الْإِمَامِ مِنْكُمْ وَاجِبَةٌ عَلَى جَمِيعِ الْخَلْقِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بَعَثَ مُحَمَّداً ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِلَى النَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ رَسُولًا وَ حُجَّةً لِلَّهِ عَلَى جَمِيعِ خَلْقِهِ فِي أَرْضِهِ فَمَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَ بِمُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَ اتَّبَعَهُ وَ صَدَّقَهُ فَإِنَّ مَعْرِفَةَ الْإِمَامِ مِنَّا وَاجِبَةٌ عَلَيْهِ وَ مَنْ لَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِاللَّهِ وَ بِرَسُولِهِ وَ لَمْ يَتَّبِعْهُ وَ لَمْ يُصَدِّقْهُ وَ يَعْرِفْ حَقَّهُمَا فَكَيْفَ يَجِبُ عَلَيْهِ مَعْرِفَةُ الْإِمَامِ وَ هُوَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَ رَسُولِهِ وَ يَعْرِفُ حَقَّهُمَا قَالَ قُلْتُ فَمَا تَقُولُ فِيمَنْ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَ رَسُولِهِ وَ يُصَدِّقُ رَسُولَهُ فِي جَمِيعِ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ يَجِبُ عَلَى أُولَئِكَ حَقُّ مَعْرِفَتِكُمْ قَالَ نَعَمْ أَ لَيْسَ هَؤُلَاءِ يَعْرِفُونَ فُلَاناً وَ فُلَاناً قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ أَ تَرَى أَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الَّذِي أَوْقَعَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَعْرِفَةَ هَؤُلَاءِ وَ اللَّهِ مَا أَوْقَعَ ذَلِكَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَّا الشَّيْطَانُ لَا وَ اللَّهِ مَا أَلْهَمَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ حَقَّنَا إِلَّا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ .

محمد بن یحیی نے احمد بن محمد سے، انہوں نے حسن بن محبوب سے، انہوں نے ہشام بن سالم سے، انہوں نے زرارہ سے روایت کی کہ: میں نے ابو جعفر علیہ السلام سے کہا، مجھے بتائیں — کیا تم میں سے امام کی معرفت تمام مخلوق پر واجب ہے؟ آپ نے فرمایا: بے شک اللہ عزوجل نے محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ کو تمام لوگوں کی طرف رسول اور اپنی زمین میں اپنی تمام مخلوق پر اللہ کی حجت بنا کر بھیجا۔ تو جو اللہ پر اور محمد رسول اللہ پر ایمان لائے، اور ان کی پیروی کرے اور ان کی تصدیق کرے — تو اس پر ہم میں سے امام کی معرفت واجب ہے۔ اور جو اللہ پر اور اس کے رسول پر ایمان نہ لائے، ان کی پیروی نہ کرے، ان کی تصدیق نہ کرے اور ان دونوں کا حق نہ پہچانے — تو اس پر امام کی معرفت کیسے واجب ہو سکتی ہے؟ انہوں نے کہا: میں نے کہا، تو آپ اس شخص کے بارے میں کیا فرماتے ہیں جو اللہ اور اس کے رسول پر ایمان رکھتا ہو اور اللہ کے رسول کی تصدیق کرتا ہو — کیا ان پر آپ کی معرفت کا حق واجب ہے؟ آپ نے فرمایا: ہاں۔ کیا یہ لوگ فلاں اور فلاں کو نہیں پہچانتے؟ میں نے کہا، ہاں۔ آپ نے فرمایا: کیا تم سمجھتے ہو کہ اللہ نے ان کے دلوں میں ان لوگوں کی معرفت ڈالی؟ اللہ کی قسم! ان کے دلوں میں یہ بات شیطان کے سوا کسی نے نہیں ڈالی۔ نہیں، اللہ کی قسم! مؤمنین کے دلوں میں ہمارا حق صرف اللہ عزوجل نے الہام کیا ہے۔
Translation
Muhammad Bin Yahya, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Al Hassan Bin Mahboub, from Hisham Bin Salim, from Zurara who said, ‘I said to Abu Ja’far<sup>asws</sup>, ‘Inform me about recognition of the Imam<sup>asws</sup> from you (Imams<sup>asws</sup>). Is it an Obligation upon the entirety of the creatures?’ So he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic Sent Muhammad<sup>asws</sup> to the people altogether as a Rasool<sup>saww</sup> and a Divine Authority of Allah<sup>azwj</sup> upon the entirety of His<sup>azwj</sup> creatures in His<sup>azwj</sup> earth. So the one who believes in Allah<sup>azwj</sup>, and in Muhammad<sup>saww</sup> as a Rasool<sup>saww</sup> of Allah<sup>azwj</sup>, and follows him<sup>asws</sup> and ratifies him<sup>saww</sup>, so the recognition of the Imam<sup>asws</sup> from us<sup>asws</sup> is an Obligation upon him; and the one who does not believe in Allah<sup>azwj</sup> and in His<sup>azwj</sup> Rasool<sup>saww</sup>, and does not follow him<sup>saww</sup> and does not ratify him<sup>saww</sup> and recognise both their rights, so how can the recognition of the Imam<sup>asws</sup> Obligate upon him while he does not believe in Allah<sup>azwj</sup> and His<sup>azwj</sup> Rasool<sup>saww</sup> and recognise both their rights?’ He (the narrator) said, ‘I said, ‘So what are you saying regarding the one who believes in Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> and His<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> Rasool<sup style="font-weight: normal">saww</sup> with regards to the entirety of what Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> has Revealed, would it Obligate upon those ones the right of your<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> recognition?’. He<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> said: ‘Yes. Aren’t they reognising so and so, and so and so?’ I said, ‘Yes’. He<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> said: ‘Is it your view that Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> is the One<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> Who Caused the recognition of those (two) to occur into their hearts? By Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup>! Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> did not Cause the occurrence of that into their hearts, except (it was) the Satan<sup style="font-weight: normal">la</sup>. No, by Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup>! None inspires the Momineen of our<sup style="font-weight: normal">asws</sup> rights except for Allah<sup style="font-weight: normal">azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic’.
