سَأَلْتُ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ فَسْئَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لا تَعْلَمُونَ فَقَالَ نَحْنُ أَهْلُ الذِّكْرِ وَ نَحْنُ الْمَسْئُولُونَ قُلْتُ فَأَنْتُمُ الْمَسْئُولُونَ وَ نَحْنُ السَّائِلُونَ قَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْتُ حَقّاً عَلَيْنَا أَنْ نَسْأَلَكُمْ قَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْتُ حَقّاً عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تُجِيبُونَا قَالَ لَا ذَاكَ إِلَيْنَا إِنْ شِئْنَا فَعَلْنَا وَ إِنْ شِئْنَا لَمْ نَفْعَلْ أَ مَا تَسْمَعُ قَوْلَ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى هذا عَطاؤُنا فَامْنُنْ أَوْ أَمْسِكْ بِغَيْرِ حِسابٍ .

میں نے رضا علیہ السلام سے سوال کیا اور ان سے کہا: میں آپ پر قربان! [قرآن 16:43] 'اگر تم نہیں جانتے تو اہل الذکر سے پوچھو۔' تو انہوں نے فرمایا: 'ہم اہل الذکر ہیں اور ہم ہی پوچھے جانے والے ہیں'۔ میں نے کہا: 'تو آپ پوچھے جانے والے ہیں اور ہم سوال کرنے والے؟' فرمایا: 'ہاں'۔ میں نے کہا: 'کیا واقعی ہم پر یہ فرض ہے کہ آپ سے سوال کریں؟' فرمایا: 'ہاں'۔ میں نے کہا: 'کیا آپ پر یہ فرض ہے کہ ہمیں جواب دیں؟' فرمایا: 'نہیں، یہ ہماری صوابدید پر ہے — اگر ہم چاہیں تو کریں، اگر نہ چاہیں تو نہ کریں'۔ کیا آپ نے اللہ تبارک و تعالیٰ کا یہ قول نہیں سنا: [38:39] 'یہ ہمارا عطیہ ہے، چاہو تو دو اور چاہو تو روکو، بغیر کسی حساب کے'؟
Translation
Al Husayn Bin Muhammad, from Moalla Bin Muhammad, from Al Washha who said, ‘I asked Al-Reza<sup>asws</sup>, so I said to him<sup>asws</sup>, ‘May I be sacrificed for you<sup>asws</sup>! <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:16#h43"><a href="/books/quran:16#h43">[16:43]</a></a> so ask the People of the Reminder if you do not know</span>?’ So he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘We<sup>asws</sup> are the <span class="iTxt">Ahl Al-Zikr</span> (The People of the Reminder), and we<sup>asws</sup> are the ones to be asked’. I said, ‘So you (Imams<sup>asws</sup>) would be answering to (all) of our questions?’ He<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘Yes’. I said, ‘It is a right upon us that we ask you<sup>asws</sup> All?’ He<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘Yes’. I said, ‘Is it a right upon you<sup>asws</sup> that you<sup>asws</sup> should answer us?’ He<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘No. That is up to us<sup>asws</sup>. If we<sup>asws</sup> so desire to, we would do so, and if we<sup>asws</sup> desire, we<sup>asws</sup> would not do so. Have you not heard the Words of Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Blessed and High <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:38#h39"><a href="/books/quran:38#h39">[38:39]</a></a> This is Our Gift, therefore give out freely or withhold, without accountability</span>?’.
