كَتَبْتُ إِلَى الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) كِتَاباً فَكَانَ فِي بَعْضِ مَا كَتَبْتُ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَسْئَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لا تَعْلَمُونَ وَ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ ما كانَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لِيَنْفِرُوا كَافَّةً فَلَوْ لا نَفَرَ مِنْ كُلِّ فِرْقَةٍ مِنْهُمْ طائِفَةٌ لِيَتَفَقَّهُوا فِي الدِّينِ وَ لِيُنْذِرُوا قَوْمَهُمْ إِذا رَجَعُوا إِلَيْهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَحْذَرُونَ فَقَدْ فُرِضَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَسْأَلَةُ وَ لَمْ يُفْرَضْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْجَوَابُ قَالَ قَالَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا لَكَ فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّما يَتَّبِعُونَ أَهْواءَهُمْ وَ مَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنِ اتَّبَعَ هَواهُ .

احمد بن محمد نے احمد بن محمد بن ابی نصر سے روایت کی، انہوں نے کہا: میں نے امام الرضا علیہ السلام کو ایک خط لکھا اور اس میں کچھ لکھا کہ اللہ عزوجل نے فرمایا: اگر تم نہیں جانتے تو اہلِ ذکر سے پوچھو۔ [۱۶:۴۳] اور اللہ عزوجل نے فرمایا: مومنین کے لیے یہ مناسب نہ تھا کہ سب مل کر نکل پڑیں، پس کیوں نہ ہر گروہ میں سے ایک جماعت نکلے تاکہ دین میں سمجھ حاصل کرے اور جب واپس آئے تو اپنی قوم کو خبردار کرے، شاید وہ بچتے رہیں؟ [۹:۱۲۲] پس ان پر سوال کرنا فرض کیا گیا ہے اور آپ پر جواب دینا فرض نہیں ہے۔ آپ نے فرمایا: اللہ تبارک و تعالیٰ نے فرمایا: لیکن اگر وہ آپ کی بات نہ مانیں تو جان لو کہ وہ صرف اپنی خواہشات کی پیروی کرتے ہیں، اور اس سے زیادہ گمراہ کون ہے جو اپنی خواہشِ نفس کی پیروی کرے؟ [۲۸:۵۰]
Translation
Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Abu Nasr who said, ‘I wrote a letter to Al-Reza<sup>asws</sup>, and it was among part of what I wrote, ‘Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic Said <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:16#h43"><a href="/books/quran:16#h43">[16:43]</a></a> so ask the People of the Reminder if you do not know</span>, and Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic Said <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:9#h122"><a href="/books/quran:9#h122">[9:122]</a></a> And it was not for the believers that they should go forth all together; why should not then a company from every party from among them go forth that they may apply themselves to obtain understanding in religion, and that they may warn their people when they come back to them that they may be cautious?</span>. So the asking has been Imposed upon them and the answering has not been Imposed upon you<sup>asws</sup>?’ He<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Blessed and High Said <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:28#h50"><a href="/books/quran:28#h50">[28:50]</a></a> But if they do not answer you, then know that they only follow their own desires; and who is more erring than he who follows his own desires</span>?’.
