لَا اعْتِكَافَ إِلَّا فِي الْعِشْرِينَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَ قَالَ إِنَّ عَلِيّاً صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ كَانَ يَقُولُ لَا أَرَى الِاعْتِكَافَ إِلَّا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ أَوْ مَسْجِدِ الرَّسُولِ أَوْ مَسْجِدٍ جَامِعٍ وَ لَا يَنْبَغِي لِلْمُعْتَكِفِ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ إِلَّا لِحَاجَةٍ لَا بُدَّ مِنْهَا ثُمَّ لَا يَجْلِسْ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ وَ الْمَرْأَةُ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ .
Translation
Sahl Bin Ziyad, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad, from Dawood Bin Sirham, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah<sup>asws</sup> having said: ‘There is no <span class="iTxt">Itikaaf</span> except during the twentieth of a Month of Ramazan’. And he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘Ali<sup>asws</sup> was saying: ‘I<sup>asws</sup> do not view the <span class="iTxt">Itikaaf</span> (as correct) except in the Sacred Masjid, or Masjid of the Rasool<sup>saww</sup>, or a general Masjid. And, it is not befitting for the performer of <span class="iTxt">Itikaaf</span> that he goes out from the Masjid except for a need which is a must from it. Then he should not sit until he returns. And (for) the woman, is similar to that’.
