سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ لكِنْ لا تُواعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا إِلَّا أَنْ تَقُولُوا قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفاً قَالَ هُوَ الرَّجُلُ يَقُولُ لِلْمَرْأَةِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَنْقَضِيَ عِدَّتُهَا أُوَاعِدُكِ بَيْتَ آلِ فُلَانٍ لِيُعَرِّضَ لَهَا بِالْخِطْبَةِ وَ يَعْنِي بِقَوْلِهِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَقُولُوا قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفاً التَّعْرِيضَ بِالْخِطْبَةِ وَ لا تَعْزِمُوا عُقْدَةَ النِّكاحِ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْكِتابُ أَجَلَهُ .
Translation
Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abu Umeyr, from Hammad, from Al Halby, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah<sup>asws</sup>, said, ‘I asked him<sup>asws</sup> about the Words of Allah<sup>azwj</sup> Mighty and Majestic <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:2#h235"><a href="/books/quran:2#h235">[2:235]</a></a> but do not give them a promise in secret unless you speak in a goodly manner</span>. He<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘He is the man who is saying to the woman before the expiration of her waiting period, ‘I promise you a house of the family of so and so, in order to introduce her with the proposal; and the Meaning of His<sup>azwj</sup> Words <span class="ibTxt">unless you speak in a goodly manner</span>, is the introduction with the proposal, <span class="ibTxt">and do not confirm the marriage tie until the writing is fulfilled</span>’.
