[Sidenote: That the belief of those fundamental points, is all that is required to salvation, as of faith.] 7. And as these are the fundamental points of faith necessary to salvation; so also are they only necessary as matter of faith, and only essential to the calling of a Christian; as may appear by many evident places of Holy Scripture: John v. 39: _Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of me_. Now, forasmuch as by the _Scripture_, is meant there the Old Testament (the New being then not written), the belief of that which was written concerning our Saviour in the Old Testament, was sufficient belief for the obtaining of eternal life: but in the Old Testament, there is nothing revealed concerning Christ, but that he is the Messiah, and such things as belong to the fundamental points thereupon depending. And therefore those _fundamental_ points are sufficient to salvation as of faith. And John vi. 28, 29: _Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them. This is the work of God, that ye believe in him, whom he hath sent._ So that the point to be believed is, _That Jesus Christ came forth from God, and he which believeth it, worketh the works of God_. John xi. 26, 27: _Whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die. Believest thou this? She said unto him, Yea, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world._ Hence followeth, _He that believeth this, shall never die_. John xx. 31: _But these things are written, that ye might believe, that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing, ye might have life through his name_. By which appeareth, that this _fundamental_ point is all that is required, as of faith to our salvation. 1 John iv. 2: _Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God_: 1 John v. 1: _Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ, is born of God_; and (verse 5) _Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth, that Jesus is the Son of God_: and verse 13: _These things have I written unto you that believe in the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life_. Acts, viii. 36, 37: _The eunuch said, Here is water, what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said unto him, If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. He answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God._ This point therefore was sufficient for the reception of man into baptism, that is to say, to Christianity. And Acts, xvi. 29-31: _The keeper of the prison fell down before Paul and Silas, and said, Sirs, what shall I do to be saved? And they said, Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ._ And the sermon of St. Peter, upon the day of Pentecost, was nothing else but an explication, that _Jesus was the Christ.
