Advaita Vedānta is a living tradition within Vedānta (Uttara Mīmāṃsā). Also written Advaita, non-dualism.
Origin
Founders named in the sources: Gauḍapāda, Śaṅkara. No founding year is given below, because the sources read do not agree on one and a date has not been chosen for them. IEP: Śaṅkara (8th century) is 'regarded as the promoter of Advaita Vedānta as a distinct school' (IEP, verbatim); he founded four centres of learning. Gauḍapāda authored the Māṇḍūkya Kārikā, 'the first complete Advaitic work'; Govinda Bhagavadpāda was Śaṅkara's direct teacher. Britannica dates Śaṅkara c. 700–750. No founding year given.
