Origin
No founding year is given below, because the sources read do not agree on one and a date has not been chosen for them. Tradition holds that St Mark brought Christianity to Alexandria in the first half of the 1st century; the see ranked with Rome and Antioch at Nicaea (325). Distinct identity dates from rejection of Chalcedon (451). The self-designation 'Coptic Orthodox' was adopted in the 19th and 20th centuries to distinguish the church from Copts who became Roman Catholic and from Greek Eastern Orthodox.
