Eastern Catholic Churches is a living tradition within Catholic Church. Also written Eastern rite churches, Uniate churches (historic, now generally deprecated), Oriental Catholic churches.
Origin
No founding year is given below, because the sources read do not agree on one and a date has not been chosen for them. Twenty-three Eastern Christian particular churches sui iuris in full communion with the pope, retaining their own liturgy, spirituality and canonical organisation. Britannica identifies the Union of Brest-Litovsk (1596), under which all but two Ukrainian Orthodox bishops accepted papal primacy, as the effective advent of the Eastern rite churches, inspired by the earlier Council of Florence (1438-39). The Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches groups them as patriarchal, major archiepiscopal, metropolitan sui iuris, and other.
