Origin
Founder named in the sources: W. D. Fard (Wali Farad Muhammad) - identity, birthplace and birth year disputed: WRSP records FBI files pointing to Portland, Oregon, other accounts to New Zealand, and Fard's own claim of Mecca. Founding date given as 1930. WRSP (Virginia Commonwealth University) records that Wallace Dodd Fard established the organisation in Detroit in 1930, building on the teachings of Noble Drew Ali's Moorish Holy Temple of Science. Elijah Muhammad (formerly Robert Poole) took control after Fard's disappearance in 1934 and led the movement until his death in 1975.
