Nyāya is recorded within Hinduism. The sources read do not establish whether it is extant. Also written Nyaya, Naiyāyika school.
Origin
Founder named in the sources: Gautama (Akṣapāda Gautama). No founding year is given below, because the sources read do not agree on one and a date has not been chosen for them. IEP: 'the oldest extant Nyaya work is the Nyāya-sūtra attributed to Gautama (c. 200 C.E.)'; IEP's Hindu Philosophy survey dates the Nyāya Sūtra to the 2nd century CE. A darśana, not a sect. Status is 'unknown' because the living/extinct axis does not apply: the system is transmitted and studied but has no independent sectarian community, and no source consulted characterises its present status.
