Thiền (Vietnamese Chan) is a living tradition within Chan. Also written Thien, Trúc Lâm.
Origin
Founder named in the sources: Trần Nhân Tông (r. 1279–1293), for the Trúc Lâm lineage. No founding year is given below, because the sources read do not agree on one and a date has not been chosen for them. The Chan School entry records the Trúc Lâm lineage associated with the emperor Nhân-Tông (r. 1279–1293), and Linji influence entering Vietnam via Chinese refugee monks in the 1660s.
