Founding date given as 1596. Constituted by the Union of Brest-Litovsk (1596), under which several million Ukrainian and Belarusian Orthodox Christians under Polish rule entered communion with Rome; Britannica describes the Ukrainians as the largest branch of Eastern Catholics.
