Zaydi Shia Islam is a living tradition within Shia Islam. Also written Zaydiyya, Fivers (imprecise older usage).
Origin
Founder named in the sources: Zayd b. 'Ali (d. 740). No founding year is given below, because the sources read do not agree on one and a date has not been chosen for them. The reference point is Zayd b. 'Ali's unsuccessful revolt against the Umayyads in Kufa in 122/740; he died in 740. Najam Haider records that convention holds Zaydism arose from the merging of Batri (proto-Sunni) and Jarudi (Imami) currents around the time of that revolt, with the Jarudi strand becoming dominant. Yahya b. al-Husayn, al-Hadi ila'l-Haqq (d. 298/911), brought Zaydism to Yemen, having come to Sa'da in 897 to mediate between the tribes. No founding year is asserted.
