Zhengyi dao (Way of Orthodox Unity)

Zhengyi dao (Way of Orthodox Unity) is a living tradition within Tianshi dao (Way of the Celestial Masters). Also written 正一道, Orthodox Unity, Way of the Correct Unity, Longhu Shan Celestial Masters.

Origin

Founders named in the sources: the Zhang lineage of Celestial Masters, Zhang Yucai, 38th-generation Celestial Master (granted the title 'Orthodox Unity Sect Leader' in 1304). Founding date given as early 3rd century CE (as the post-Han continuation of Tianshi dao); consolidated 1239 and 1304. The Stanford Encyclopedia treats Zhengyi as the name for the post-Han diaspora form of Tianshi dao, emerging after the Han collapse in the early 3rd century. Consolidation: in 1239 the Southern Song emperor Lizong is reported to have ordered the 35th Celestial Master Zhang Keda to unite Lingbao, Shangqing and Zhengyi under the Zhengyi name at Mount Longhu; in 1304 Zhang Yucai, 38th-generation Celestial Master, was granted authority over the three talismanic mountains, drawing the southern talismanic lineages into Zhengyi.
