_Atesto pri facileco_ (se oni bezonas plu!).--Mi estis aŭdinta pri Esperanto, sed mi sciis nenion pri _ĝ_i antaŭ _gestera_ (hieraŭ) vespero, kiam amiko sendis al mi leteron skribitan en Esperanto. Post tri kvar_t_onoj da horo, _per la helpo de unu kopio_ (_kajero_) _de_ The Esperantist, kiun mi ricevis kune kun mia letero, mi povis skribi Esperantan respondon! Post vespermanĝo tr_e_ horojn da nokto mi laboris (studis) pri la paĝoj de la Gazeto. Nun, morgaŭe, mi estas leginta granda(n) parto(n) de la Gazeto, kaj mi povas kompreni la vortojn preskaŭ tutajn, kvankam mi havas nek vortaron nek gramatikon, ekceptinte The Esperantist. Esperanto ja estas mirindega lingvo. La alia lingvo internacia, la malnova _Volapük_ ne povis kompariĝi kun tiu ĉi. Ju pli mi vidas pri ĝi, des pli korege mi ŝatas ĝin. Volu pardoni min, se mia letero enhavas kelkajn er_o_rojn kaj kredu ke mi estas, via tre vere, N.L.H. en Calcutta, Hindujo. The italics are ours.--Editor). * * * Referring to your notes in a recent number of The Esperantist, I believe that the best way of spreading a knowledge of Esperanto is for the London Chamber of Commerce to demand from every candidate for their certificate a competent knowledge of the language--that they should be at least able to read and write Esperanto; later on, candidates might be required to speak the language. This suggestion would be somewhat unreasonable if learning to read and write Esperanto involved much labour; but I am surely overrating the difficulty when I assert that any boy of average ability would be able to conquer it by devoting one hour a week to it during our academical term of three months. A slow boy might require two terms, but slow boys are not wanted in the City or elsewhere. English people are so abominably shy of any new proposal, especially when it is one of a promising nature, that I shall not be at all surprised if you continue to cry in the wilderness for many a year to come.
