قُلْتُ لَهُ اتَّخَذُوا أَحْبارَهُمْ وَ رُهْبانَهُمْ أَرْباباً مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ أَمَا وَ اللَّهِ مَا دَعَوْهُمْ إِلَى عِبَادَةِ أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَ لَوْ دَعَوْهُمْ مَا أَجَابُوهُمْ وَ لَكِنْ أَحَلُّوا لَهُمْ حَرَاماً وَ حَرَّمُوا عَلَيْهِمْ حَلَالًا فَعَبَدُوهُمْ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ .

ہمارے کئی اصحاب نے احمد بن محمد بن خالد سے، انہوں نے عبد اللہ بن یحیی سے، انہوں نے ابن مسکان سے، انہوں نے ابو بصیر سے، انہوں نے ابو عبد اللہ علیہ السلام سے روایت کی کہ: میں نے ان سے کہا (اس آیت کے بارے میں): 'انہوں نے اپنے علماء اور راہبوں کو اللہ کے علاوہ رب بنا لیا' [9:31]۔ تو آپ نے فرمایا: اللہ کی قسم، انہوں نے انہیں اپنی عبادت کی طرف نہیں بلایا، اور اگر بلاتے بھی تو وہ جواب نہ دیتے۔ لیکن انہوں نے ان کے لیے حرام کو حلال کر دیا اور ان پر حلال کو حرام کر دیا، تو انہوں نے انہیں ایسی جگہ سے پوجا جہاں سے انہیں خبر نہ تھی۔
Translation
A number of our companions, from Ahmad Bin Muhammad Bin Khalid, from Abdullah Bin Yahya, from Ibn Muskan, from Abu Baseer, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah<sup>asws</sup>, said, ‘I said to him<sup>asws</sup>, ‘(What about the Verse) <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:9#h31"><a href="/books/quran:9#h31">[9:31]</a></a> They are taking their Rabbis and their Monks for lords besides Allah</span>?’ So he<sup>asws</sup> said: ‘But, by Allah<sup>azwj</sup>! They (their priests) did not call to them their own worship. And had they called them, they would not have responded. But, they (priests) permitted for them what was Prohibited, and they prohibited what was Permissible. Thus, they worshipped them (indirectly) from where (an aspect) they were not aware’.
