صالح القماط نے ہم سے بیان کیا، ابان بن تغلب سے، انہوں نے ابو عبد اللہ علیہ السلام سے روایت کی کہ آپ نے فرمایا: 'لوگ چار قسم کے ہیں۔' میں نے عرض کیا: 'آپ پر قربان جاؤں! وہ کیا ہیں؟' آپ نے فرمایا: 'ایک آدمی جسے ایمان دیا گیا لیکن قرآن نہیں؛ ایک آدمی جسے قرآن دیا گیا لیکن ایمان نہیں؛ ایک آدمی جسے قرآن بھی دیا گیا اور ایمان بھی؛ اور ایک آدمی جسے نہ قرآن دیا گیا نہ ایمان۔' راوی نے کہا: میں نے عرض کیا: 'آپ پر قربان جاؤں! ان کی حالت میرے لیے بیان فرمائیں۔' تو آپ نے فرمایا: 'جس کو ایمان دیا گیا لیکن قرآن نہیں، تو اس کی مثال کھجور کی مانند ہے — اس کا ذائقہ میٹھا ہے لیکن اس میں کوئی خوشبو نہیں۔ جس کو قرآن دیا گیا لیکن ایمان نہیں، اس کی مثال مرسین کی طرح ہے — اس کی خوشبو تو اچھی ہے لیکن ذائقہ کڑوا ہے۔ جس کو قرآن بھی دیا گیا اور ایمان بھی، اس کی مثال ترنج کی طرح ہے — اس کی خوشبو بھی اچھی ہے اور ذائقہ بھی۔ جس کو نہ ایمان دیا گیا نہ قرآن، اس کی مثال اندرائن کی طرح ہے — اس کا ذائقہ کڑوا ہے اور اس میں کوئی خوشبو نہیں۔'

Translation

Abu Ali Al Asjary, from Al Hassan Bin Ali Bin Abdullah, from Ubeys Bin Hisham who said, ‘Salih Al Qammat narrated to us, from Aban Bin Taghlub, (It has been narrated) from Abu Abdullah^asws having said: ‘The people are four (types)’. So I said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you^asws! And what (types) are they?’ So he^asws said: ‘A man Given the <span class="iTxt">Eman</span> and not been Given the Quran; and a man Given the Quran and not been Given the <span class="iTxt">Eman</span>; and a man Given the Quran and Given the <span class="iTxt">Eman</span>; and a man not Given the Quran nor the <span class="iTxt">Eman</span>’. He (the narrator) said, ‘I said, ‘May I be sacrificed for you^asws! Explain their states to me’. So he^asws said: ‘As for the one Given the <span class="iTxt">Eman</span> and not been Given the Quran, so his example it like an example of the date. Its taste is sweet, but there is no aroma for it. And as for the one Given the Quran and not Given the <span class="iTxt">Eman</span>, so his example is like an example of the myrtle. Its smell is aromatic and its taste is bitter. And as for the one Given the Quran and the <span class="iTxt">Eman</span>, so his example it like an example of the citrus. Its smell is aromatic and its taste is good. And as for the one neither Given the <span class="iTxt">Eman</span> nor the Quran, so his example is like an example of the colocynth, its taste is bitter and there is no (aromatic) smell to it’.
