ہم ابو عبد اللہ علیہ السلام کی خدمت میں تھے اور ہمارے ساتھ کچھ مالدار لوگ بھی تھے۔ انہوں نے زکوٰۃ کا ذکر کیا تو ابو عبد اللہ علیہ السلام نے فرمایا: 'زکوٰۃ ایسی چیز نہیں جس کی وجہ سے اس کا ادا کرنے والا قابل تعریف ہو، یہ تو محض ایک ظاہری چیز ہے — اس کے ذریعے اس نے بس اپنا خون محفوظ کیا ہے اور مسلمان کہلایا ہے۔ اور اگر وہ اسے ادا نہ کرتا تو اس کی نماز قبول نہ ہوتی۔ اور بے شک تم پر تمہارے اموال میں زکوٰۃ کے علاوہ بھی (حق) ہے۔' تو میں نے کہا: 'اللہ آپ کو درست رکھے! ہمارے اموال میں زکوٰۃ کے علاوہ اور کیا ہے؟' تو آپ نے فرمایا: 'سبحان اللہ! کیا آپ نے اللہ عزوجل کو اپنی کتاب میں فرماتے ہوئے نہیں سنا: اور جو لوگ اپنے مالوں میں ایک مقررہ حق رکھتے ہیں — سائل اور محروم کے لیے؟' میں نے کہا: 'یہ مقررہ حق کیا ہے جو ہم پر ہے؟' آپ نے فرمایا: 'یہ وہ چیز ہے جو آدمی اپنے مال سے کرتا ہے، جو وہ دن میں دیتا ہے، یا جمعے میں، یا مہینے میں، کم ہو یا زیادہ، بس اس پر مداومت کرتا ہے۔' اور اللہ عزوجل کا یہ فرمان: اور وہ ضرورت کی چیز روکتے ہیں — یہ وہ قرض ہے جو وہ دیتا ہے، اور وہ بھلائی جو وہ کرتا ہے، اور گھر کا سامان جو وہ عاریۃً دیتا ہے، اور انہی میں زکوٰۃ بھی ہے۔' تو میں نے ان سے کہا: 'ہمارے کچھ ایسے پڑوسی ہیں کہ جب ہم انہیں سامان عاریۃً دیتے ہیں تو وہ اسے توڑ دیتے اور خراب کر دیتے ہیں۔ کیا ہم پر گناہ ہے اگر ہم انہیں دینے سے انکار کریں؟' تو آپ نے فرمایا: 'نہیں، اگر وہ ایسے ہیں تو تم پر کوئی گناہ نہیں کہ انہیں دینے سے انکار کرو۔' آپ نے فرمایا: میں نے ان سے کہا: '(اور اس آیت کا کیا مطلب ہے) اور وہ اللہ کی محبت میں مسکین، یتیم اور قیدی کو کھانا کھلاتے ہیں؟' آپ نے فرمایا: 'یہ زکوٰۃ سے نہیں ہے۔' میں نے کہا: 'اللہ عزوجل کا یہ فرمان: جو لوگ اپنے اموال رات اور دن، پوشیدہ اور ظاہر خرچ کرتے ہیں؟' آپ نے فرمایا: 'یہ زکوٰۃ سے نہیں ہے۔' میں نے کہا: 'اللہ عزوجل کا یہ فرمان: اگر تم صدقات ظاہر کرو تو یہ بھی اچھا ہے، اور اگر انہیں چھپاؤ اور فقراء کو دو تو یہ تمہارے لیے بہتر ہے؟' آپ نے فرمایا: 'یہ زکوٰۃ سے نہیں ہے، اور اپنے رشتے داروں کو صلہ رحمی کرنا بھی زکوٰۃ سے نہیں ہے۔'

Translation

Ali Bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Al Husayn Bin Saeed, from Fazalat Bin Ayoub, from Abu Al Magra’a, from Abu Baseer who said, ‘We were in the presence of Abu Abdullah^asws, and with us was an owner of the wealth (rich man), and they mentioned the <span class="iTxt">Zakāt</span>, so Abu Abdullah^asws said: ‘The <span class="iTxt">Zakāt</span> is not something which its payer is praised by, and rather it is something which is apparent. But rather, his blood is saved by it and he is named as a Muslim by it, and if were he not to pay it, <span class="iTxt">Salāt</span> would not be Acceptable from him, and that upon you, regarding your wealth, is other than the <span class="iTxt">Zakāt</span>’. So I said, ‘May Allah^azwj Keep you well! And what is (imposed) upon us regarding our wealth, apart from the <span class="iTxt">Zakāt</span>?’ So he^asws said: ‘Glory be to Allah^azwj! Have you not heard Allah^azwj Mighty and Majestic Saying in His^azwj Book <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:70#h24"><a href="/books/quran:70#h24">[70:24]</a></a> And those in whose wealth there is a known right <a href="/#/books/quran:70#h25"><a href="/books/quran:70#h25">[70:25]</a></a> For him who asks and for him who is denied</span>?’ I said, ‘What is that ‘known right’ which is upon us?’ He^asws said: ‘It is something which the man works for regarding his wealth which he gives during the day, or during the Friday, or during the month, little or more, apart from that he is persistent upon it. And the Words of the Mighty and Majestic <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:107#h7"><a href="/books/quran:107#h7">[107:7]</a></a> And withhold the necessaries of life</span>. It (necessaries of life) is the loan which he lends out, and the goodness of lending the chattels of his house, and from it is the <span class="iTxt">Zakāt</span>’. So I said to him^asws, ‘There are neighbours of ours when we lend chattels, they break it, and spoil it. So would there be a blame upon us if were to withhold from them?’ So he^asws said: ‘No, there is no blame upon you if you were to withhold from them when they were like that’. He (the narrator) said, ‘I said to him^asws, ‘(What about) <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:76#h8"><a href="/books/quran:76#h8">[76:8]</a></a> And they give food out of love for Him to the poor and the orphan and the captive</span>?’ He^asws said: ‘Not from the <span class="iTxt">Zakāt</span>’. I said, ‘The Words of the Mighty and Majestic <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:2#h274"><a href="/books/quran:2#h274">[2:274]</a></a> (As for) those who are spending their property by the night and by the day, secretly and openly</span>?’ He^asws said: ‘Not from the <span class="iTxt">Zakāt</span>’. I said, ‘The Words of the Mighty and Majestic <span class="ibTxt"><a href="/#/books/quran:2#h271"><a href="/books/quran:2#h271">[2:271]</a></a> If you give alms openly, it is good, and if you hide it and give it to the poor, it is better for you</span>?’ He^asws said: ‘Not from the <span class="iTxt">Zakāt</span>; and your helping the relatives is not from the <span class="iTxt">Zakāt</span>’.
