The writers of _logic_ have endeavoured to digest the names of all the kinds of things into certain _scales_ or degrees, by the continual subordination of names less common, to names more common. In the scale of _bodies_ they put in the first and highest place _body_ simply, and in the next place under it less common names, by which it may be more limited and determined, namely _animated_ and _inanimated_, and so on till they come to _individuals_. In like manner, in the scale of _quantities_, they assign the first place to _quantity_, and the next to _line_, _superficies_, and _solid_, which are names of less latitude; and these orders or scales of names they usually call _predicaments_ and _categories_.
