John Stuart Mill
London
English utilitarian and champion of individual liberty and representative government.

Biography
John Stuart Mill was raised as an experiment. His father James, ally of Jeremy Bentham, had him reading Greek at three and political economy at thirteen — and at twenty the machine broke: a depression Mill's Autobiography describes as the discovery that achieving all his trained-for reforms would bring him no joy. Wordsworth's poetry, he says, retaught him feeling; the crisis made him the rare system-builder who kept measuring systems against inner life.
Utilitarianism (1861) restated Bentham's creed — actions are right as they promote happiness — with a decisive amendment: pleasures differ in quality, not just quantity. "Better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied." On Liberty (1859), written with Harriet Taylor, whom he credited as co-author of his best thought, is liberalism's scripture: the only purpose for which power may be exercised over anyone against his will is to prevent harm to others; and truth itself needs open combat, since even a true opinion held without challenge becomes "dead dogma." The Subjection of Women (1869) applied the argument where Victorian nerve failed, and as MP he moved the first women's-suffrage amendment in parliamentary history.
On religion he published mainly posthumously (Three Essays on Religion, 1874), and with a candor that disappointed both camps: the design argument, he thought, retains some probable force — but points to a God limited in power, since nature's cruelties forbid inferring omnipotence and perfect goodness together. "A being who could make a world like this" cannot be both, argued his Nature; hope in a finite God doing his best is licit, worship of omnipotent cruelty is not. His examination speech stands as the era's cleanest moral defiance: rather hell than call such a being good.
